Mission statement
The National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns is a diverse group whose purpose is to advocate for the rehabilitation needs of multicultural persons with disabilities; ensure the provision of quality and equitable services; and enhance the development of multicultural rehabilitation professionals.

Purpose
It shall be the purpose of this organization to promote and advocate a greater understanding of the needs of multicultural populations with disabilities, to assist multicultural populations to become self-sufficient and reach their highest level of attainment in society.

Goals
The National Association of Multicultural Rehabilitation Concerns is a progressive association of dedicated individuals whose goal is to effect positive change and create opportunities for multicultural populations in the field of rehabilitation. Its philosophy is action-oriented and incorporates the following goals:

  • To provide professional seminars, workshops and training that focus on cultural diversity in rehabilitation and enhanced service delivery to multicultural persons with disabilities
  • To advocate, propose and support legislation that addresses the need of multicultural persons with disabilities and their communities
  • To encourage and recruit people of color to enter the field of rehabilitation
  • To provide current information on issues at the national, state and local levels
  • To educate the multicultural community on services available to persons with disabilities and their families

2009 NAMRC SCHOLARSHIP AWARD OPPORTUNITY!

Purpose: To support minority students who are pursuing careers in Rehabilitation counseling and related fields.

Eligibility: All applicants must be NAMRC members and racial/ethnic minority students who are enrolled in undergraduate or CORE accredited graduate rehabilitation counseling programs, or in an accredited program in a related field.Selection

Criteria: At the graduate level, a minimum of 3.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale OR at the undergraduate level, a minimum of 2.8 GPA on a 4.0 scale. All applicants must submit a four to six (4-6) page response to an essay question developed by the Scholarship Committee focused on multicultural issues. Three (3) letters of recommendation will be reviewed by the NAMRC Scholarship Committee. Lastly, asan award winner, an agreement must be made to attend and present a paper at the 2009 NAMRC Conference.

Award Amounts: The amount of $1,000 each will be provided to an undergraduate and graduate recipient.

Process: Applicants must complete a scholarship application, including a statement of current grants, scholarships and financial aid, an official transcript, a response to the essay question and three (3) letters of recommendation. Letters of recommendation must come from the following sources: A) an educator in the field rehabilitationcounseling or related area; B) a community sponsor who is knowledgeable about the student in an employment or volunteer capacity; and C) other (non-relative)letter of applicant's choice).


ESSAY QUESTION

All applicants must respond to the following question:"Multicultural persons with disabilities are purported to face unique barriers affecting their employment and integration into society. What do you consider to be their most significant barriers, and how as a rehabilitation professional and change agent might you help overcome them?"Applicants are required to submit a scholarly written four to six (4 to 6) page paper responding to the above question. Quotes or citations of other's work should be appropriately credited and documented.
